The best travel destinations in December/January in Europe

Die besten Reiseziele im Dezember/Januar in Europa

When we looked into the topic of traveling in a camper and especially Europe, we honestly did not really know that there are regions in Europe where this is still possible and even very pleasant temperatures prevail. In these regions it is very hot in summer, but in winter still incredibly pleasant with around 20 degrees.

In the sun it seemed to us in January in Spain even a lot warmer. Almost already summer temperatures like in Germany.
So why not escape from the German winter and fill up on sun for a few weeks.

Your driving home you also have directly there, so here we go with our 5 tips with great destinations in December and January.

Spain - Andalusia

Andalusia is located in the south of Spain and impresses especially with its wonderful white small villages, such as Zuheros, Setenil de las Bodegas, Frigiliana and Grazalema.
In addition, it is definitely worthwhile to make a side trip to larger cities such as Malaga, Seville or Granada.

At the beaches of Andalusia you can stand very free or you can look for a pitch at one of the campsites.

The advantage in the winter months is definitely that it is less crowded, despite pleasant temperatures. The temperatures in December and January are between 15-20 degrees.

Since it gets a bit cooler at night (between 4-6 degrees), we recommend you to have a heater on board.

Spain - Canaries

(Fuerteventura, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro)

If you are already down in the south of Spain, it actually offers itself to make a side trip to the Canary Islands.
How can you do that with a group of islands?

It's actually not that complicated, because there are regular ferries from mainland Spain to the Canary Islands.

There is also room for a motorhome. You can take the ferry from Huelva or Cadiz. Especially with a camper or motorhome we recommend to book in advance, so that you really get a place.
Between the islands you can also easily take the ferry back and forth.

Scenically, the Canary Islands have a lot to offer and are actually quite different. On the eastern islands you will find picturesque beaches, while the western part of the island shows itself mainly through mountain landscapes and a lot of nature. The thermometer usually does not go below 20 degrees on the Canary Islands. Even at night it is still very pleasant with about 15 degrees average temperature.

Algarve Portugal

The Algarve is located in the very south of Portugal, so that here are very mild temperatures even in winter.

We have traveled through Portugal ourselves for a few months and recommend the Algarve especially in the winter months.
In summer it is much too crowded in our opinion.

Scenically, you will find beautiful sandy beaches, but also steep cliffs that make the nature something very special.
We can especially recommend the city of Lagos. It has a wonderful old town with small streets and houses in bright white.

Temperatures are between 16-20 degrees during the day. At night it cools down to 8-10 degrees. Warm clothes and a heater are also highly recommended here.

Antalya Turkey

While in the northeast of Turkey sometimes sub-zero temperatures prevail, it is still pleasantly warm in the south of Turkey. Turkey impresses with flat land, but also lush mountains.
Would you rather experience the Turkish culture in the big city of Antalya or stay at one of the wonderful beaches? Turkey definitely has both on offer.
With temperatures between 16-20 degrees during the day and 8-10 degrees at night, it is great to stay in a camper van or caravan.

Morocco

Morocco belongs to the African countries and can be reached from the mainland of Spain within 1.5-2 hours.

In the summer months it is quite hot in Morocco. In winter, however, it is definitely fun to experience the culture of Morocco at a pleasant 20-25 degrees. Whether a visit to a medina, a Turkish bath in a hamam or crystal clear starry skies in the desert. There is sure to be something for everyone.

Most of Morocco's roads are also great to drive through in a camper or motorhome. At night, the temperatures drop to about 12-15 degrees, a very pleasant sleeping temperature, in my opinion.

Finally, we can tell you from our own experience that a trip to one of the countries in winter is definitely worth it. Not only the temperatures are incredibly pleasant. The sun's rays do you good when you've just come from cold and dark Germany and it's not as crowded as in the summer months. Since it also rains sometimes in winter, in contrast to summer, everything is also less dry.

In spring it slowly becomes wonderfully green. What better way than to sit by the sea in the evening and make a campfire. I wish you a lot of fun on your trip.
